Richard III Society

Now before you start thinking that Lord Burgh is a Ricardian supporter and that this is a shameless plug for the Society, it is not.  Politically Sir Thomas was a confirmed Yorkist and yet, all around him, were Lancastrians. His wife’s family were all die-hard Lancastrians, his ancestors, the Percy’s, were and many of the associates he dealt with. Even his cousin, Henry, Lord Grey of Codnor, started off supporting Henry VI.

Sir Thomas, like many other members of the Yorkist Government, started off in support of the new King Richard III but whether he like many others disapproved of the Kings actions and methods, we will never know. What is certain is that Sir Thomas attended the King, he raised troops for him, engaged on diplomatic work for him, was made a member of the Order of The Garter, but was absent from the final reckoning at Bosworth in August 1485, so it is hard to prove total support, is it not?

Having said all that, Sir Thomas and Lady Burgh would, we are sure, have approved of the Richard III Societies aims and its action, in making people, across the World, aware of Richard III, love or hate him, and of the late medieval world he lived in. In fact, it is the research and publishing of the results, the support for associated buildings, like our own home at Gainsborough Old Hall, that are a real credit to the Society, and the reason why we are most happy to provide a page on this site to promote it.  You do not have to be a rabid pro Ricardian to be a member; the research, information and sponsorship offered to potential new members should appeal to anyone with an interest in the history of The Wars of The Roses and the Yorkist/Lancastrian periods, even if you do hate Richard III!
