Sarah Thursfield

Medieval tailor and militant seamstress.

I started making dolls’ clothes in the early 1960’s and have been learning ever since.   The fascination for me lies in discovering or deducing how things were done at the time, and in understanding how technical changes affected the clothes people wore – not only changes in textile production, but in such unexpected fields as wire-drawing or armour design.

My emphasis is always on identifying the typical dress of the time – not just the prettiest!

I’ve been dressing some members of the Burgh household for over ten years, and we have all learned a great deal from it.  But the process of learning never ends, and no-one who is serious about historical re-creation should ever stop trying to improve on what they do.   We don’t just wear a costume – we try to get into their clothes.

My interests go beyond the fifteenth century, back for thousands of years to the earliest evidence for clothing; and forwards into Tudor and Stuart dress.  I seek to trace the development of clothing technology and of the individual garments which make up the dress of any given date, because only by taking a long view can we make sense of the detail.

And I’m available!   As a demonstrator for historical events, as a lecturer for technical or recreational groups, as a teacher for societies or individuals wanting more than the book can offer.  Look me up in Call to Arms, or e-mail me on milseam@btinternet.com
